Keyless Entry Systems Used by Car Theft that Car Owners Have to be Aware

Posted on

It’s freaky enough having a theft breaking into your car, taking away your belongings and also taking away your cars. This sad fact is unfortunately very common in the USA and the number of the car theft event increases over the years. With so many new systems, breaking into cars with keyless entry is very easy that guy from next door can actually do that. So, as car owner, you should be really careful when leaving your car unattended in the public space. To make it clearer, the new system to open the car without key actually comes from Europe and is known as keyless system. It has been being a new technology among the car thefts.

Keyless Entry Device

The origin of the device to unlock car doors allowing keyless entry into locked cars came from a third party security expert which then handed over it to a non profit organization based in Illinois that is created by people working in insurance industry known as National Insurance Crime Bureau. Then, they began the test. During the test, it was figured out how the device actually works. Apparently, it uses 2 sets of equipment. The first device is used to pick up the signal that is sent from the car’s key fob to car to allow owners locking the car’s doors. Another device is used to pick up the signal and trick the car so the car thinks the device as key fob. So, it works pretty fast in only matter of minutes. Then, the thief can get into the car and do almost anything with it.

In the test, there were 35 cars tested and 19 of them were able to be opened using the device. In fact, the device could even start and drive 18 cars away. Among the most vulnerable cars include 2016 Chevrolet Impala, 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid, 2017 Toyota Camry and 2015 Ford Edge. In the last few months, the incident of keyless entry into vacant cars in the US after the key fob code grabber device was finally entering the US from Europe. Apparently, this device is only one among several other technologies used for the same purpose. So, it gets pretty worrying about the danger that car owners have to deal with when leaving their car vacant in public space.

According to the police, the number of car owners who report the incident of having somebody entered their cars using this typical device has increased. Not only does it happen in public space but also to cars that are parked on the street just outside the houses.

Car Remote Code Grabber

Basically, the keyless entry device explained above is also known as code grabber. A man who was on his way traveling across Canada had the incident involving car remote code grabber. He made a stop at roadside park to go to vending machines for only 5 minutes. But when he returned to his car, he lost laptop computer, cell phone and any other valuable belongings. This incident was very shocking because the thief could get inside the car and stole stuffs in less than 5 minutes. When the police came, they found no signs of forced entry because the car’s doors remain intact as well as the windows.

What the police ask to all car owners is to manually lock the car’s door instead of using the car remote key. Why? Because it’s the only way on how to how to prevent keyless car theft from using the device to get into the car easily. How does this mystery device unlock cars actually work? Well, when you lock the door on key chain, the car remote key sends code through airwaves. And this is when the device intercepts and steals the code. So, the car thinks that the device is its actual key fob. A very simple way of work that doesn’t require effort for the thieves to do whatever they like with your car.

Learning the fact that the device doesn’t only work to open the car’s doors but also to start the engine to drive the car away is very frightening. Imagine that you can lose your car in a matter of minutes as you walk away from your car. Now, the keyless entry cars stolen incident will be common and increasing in number. So, it’s important to take the necessary measures before it happens to you.

According to information from tech-security company, there have been many surveillance footages taken in many states showing the car thieves and power amplifier car theft using the similar technology to enter the cars easily. It clearly shows how the situation has gotten a bit dangerous. More people have also shared their experience of having this incident. In the near future, the number of incident may increase.

The similar thing happened to a person named Rich Selsted, 60 years old who works as pharmaceutical executive working in San Francisco. He said he experienced more than once incident of thief breaking into his car. He had his car stolen once. Later, he had the car broken into using the similar technology twice. He suspects the technology is a keyless hacking technology. Hacking into vacant cars seems to be much easier due to this technology, something that every car owner has to be aware of. The list of cars who are able to be hacked is quite surprising though because many of them are the latest cars claimed to be using latest advanced technologies.

Learning from this incident, cars’ manufacturers should improve and upgrade their security system so there will be no more incident involving snopes car lock. It is obvious how fragile the current technology is and how it doesn’t favor the car owners at all. Perhaps, the way the code relayed to the car when locking the doors should be changed. Or, the technology is upgraded and changed so it doesn’t give any room for any devices to gain keyless entry into cars. A big homework for all the manufacturers.
